I usually try to couch my answers to advice questions — to ‘keep it in the “i”’ as they say in certain rooms — but this is the one time i won’t:
Don’t. meet editors at cons. Shake hands, get cards, get the fuck away from the booth. If you see ‘em at a bar, buy a round. Because nobody’s reading anything at a con and — dirty secret time — everybody spends a long five minutes the day their plane leaves with the hotel room garbage can, sifting through whatever they were given at shows, trying to decide what weight is worth lugging back to fuckknows and what shall not be leaving the la quinta. Don’t pitch at shows. Meet people. Have a conversation. Is this the right place for you? Is yours right for that place? Are these people you could work with? Do they HAVE a sub. policy already? Don’t be hungry at shows. Be human. Say hi.
Then send the pitch on monday.
I do know people whose conversation at a con turned instantly to a green lit project. These are people who the publisher wanted to work with. While creators don’t always know which people in the industry are crushing on them - insecurity! insecurity! - it’s unlikely one is you.
Do as Matt says. Meet people. Be human. Don’t be needy. Decide if they’re right for you as much as they’ll decide you’re right for them. Don’t be needy. Really, don’t be needy.
Can’t emphasise/re-state this enough.
"But I’m an exception —" No, you’re not.
"But my pitch is so amazing —" No, it isn’t.
"But I know they’re secretly looking —" No, they’re not.
You know what editors are looking for at cons? To re-establish relationships with existing creators, to meet fellow editors for a gossip and bitch, and to maybe — maybe — meet some cool new people on the scene, in case those people pitch them in the future.
Not at the con. Not at the bar. Not in the bathroom. Seriously. Just be sociable, get to know people, and talk to them about things besides comics. Be human. Be cool.
Yep yep yep.
Never get why, when a publisher SPECIFICALLY ask people to not pitch things to them at a con, people still try.
